United Way is a nonprofit organization that works to improve the lives of people in their communities.
The Innovation Fund of United Way Worldwide will benefit from your cryptocurrency gift. The Innovation Fund promotes the development of novel technologies and ways to address the nation's most pressing health and human service issues.
Cryptocurrencies according to some NGOs, are becoming a more significant source of money.
As the popularity of cryptocurrencies grows, so does the number of people who use them to contribute to charity.
Crypto donations to United Way Worldwide have increased by 350 percent in the last year compared to the previous year.
And it isn't just about United Way. In a single day, a crypto-focused Giving Tuesday event earned millions of dollars for 1,000 NGOs.
"We're finding that we're actually tapping into a new demographic and a new generation, and it's simply amazing to be able to present them with the chance to have a difference," said Edwin Goutier, United Way Worldwide's Vice President of Innovation.
According to Goutier, 80 percent of visitors to United Way's bitcoin area are men in their twenties. This is in contrast to the rest of their website, where 80 percent of visitors are middle-aged women.
Cryptocurrencies make up a minuscule part of donations to organizations, according to Rick Cohen of the National Council of Nonprofits, which the United Way agrees with.
"I'm not sure that cryptocurrency will ever be able to replace ordinary cash donations, but it's something that, when NGOs learn that it's something their contributors want to be able to use, they'll go ahead and integrate it when it makes sense," Cohen said.
Small NGOs are still wary about cryptocurrency donations.
"It may be rather volatile in terms of value, and many people are unfamiliar with it. Especially when it comes to smaller NGOs who don't have much in the way of infrastructure. that do not have financial gurus on staff or even someone with a significant amount of financial understanding who can counsel them, "Cohen said. "It's something that makes them anxious."
United Way safeguards itself against market volatility by selling the cryptocurrency as soon as it is received.
Nonprofits are also keeping an eye on how the US government could regulate cryptocurrencies in the future.
"What I believe will happen in the future, as bitcoin acceptance grows, is that suppliers that formerly supplied NGOs will be introduced as a native payment mechanism," Goutier said. "So you'll start to see more cryptocurrency alternatives right next to PayPal and Apple Pay, but I believe that's still a few years away."
Nonprofits require assistance this Christmas season, regardless of how donations are made. Smaller local NGOs, according to Cohen, have noticed a drop in donations, and relief monies that kept them afloat during the epidemic have gone out.
