Nepal launch e-passport service
Finally Nepal has lunch e-passport services on Wednesday with a 102-year-old academician and cultural expert becoming the first person to get chip-based identification document minister foreign affairs Narayan khadka inaugurated the first e-passport personalisaton Centre at tripureshor in Kathmandu. At the function the minister of Nepal passport department hand over the first Nepalis e-passport to litterateur Satya Mohan joshi.
Nepal has launched machine-readable passports in 2010,replacing the handwritten travel documents. the handwritten passport were completely phased in 2015applicants for new passports can apply for the e-passport from November 18 . the machine readable passport will valid until 2031
An e-passport will ensure enhanced security with installed electric chips consisting of biometric data, foreign ministry said in a statement. "Nepal's standing would undoubtedly leapfrog with the issuing of the new passports," said Dornath Aryal, director general of the Department of Passports, adding, "We are going to issue one of the greatest passports in Asia in terms of security, design, and other aspects."
Though many Nepalis who have traveled internationally will be unsurprised by the ranking, it is still cause for concern, especially given that Nepal is no longer in the midst of a conflict, has not been involved in any large-scale criminal or terrorist incident, is a democracy, and is politically stable.
"Nepal has been placed lower not because of the quality of its passports," a joint secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained, adding, "it is owing to the country's poor economic situation, inadequate immigration system, war, and Nepalis overstaying their visas overseas, among other factors."

what is an e-passport?
The e-passport is a modernized version of the passport that has bee in use for decades. It has a small electronic chip that store the users personal information and photo. The chip is encrypted and embedded in the back cover of the passport. In addition to the chip, the passport also has machine readable zone on the front cover. the e-passport has been designed to be more secure its predecessor and it complaint with the latest international standards.

Meanwhile, the Department of Passports has made public costs for obtaining e-passports from Nepal and Nepalese missions abroad mandatory.

The government had chosen a French firm to produce electronic machine-readable travel papers known as e-passports.
The idemai identification and security French SAS was chosen because it submitted the lowest offer (USD 21.1 million) for security printing, supply and delivery installation, testing and commissioning of the equipment, and personalization of passports.
